Project log - 21st July

Since my last update, I have made good progress with my blog. I have completed half of the research tasks which now gives me a good amount of time over the holidays to be able to complete the rest of it. I have completed all of the tasks which I had the strongest understanding of and those which I am accessible to certain software. When I return from holiday and go back to school, I hope to be back on track working on my planning of my video and also the continuance of researching into all of the different areas I need to study for my music video.

Project log - 19th July

As I will be going on holiday in a few days, I have done some extra work in order to allow myself the time when I get home to relax and continue working without being too far behind. I need to ensure that I am working to a high standard and am getting all my work done on time, so that I can meet my deadline without having to rush or be panicked about having little amounts of time. I want to be able to finish as much of the research tasks by the end of the summer holidays, allowing myself the time to work on planning during lessons and my free time, helping me complete it quicker.

Project log - 15th July

Today in class we didn't use any of our time to work on our coursework, we used it purely on a green screen practise lesson. Even though we missed out on being able to progress on our coursework, we learnt how to film, edit and produce a green screen performance which will benefit me in the process of making my music video. If I do decide to make my video using the green screen, I would have learnt new techniques and a new software which will be beneficial and could impact on the success of timings and the overall outcome.

Research of Genre

Project Log - 9th July

Since my last project log I've been working through my checklist. I have been trying to complete as many of the research tasks as I could, using the different softwares such as Prezi, video, text and powerpoint. I have struggled with the understanding of some of the tasks, but the ones I have a stronger understanding of, I have made to a high quality.

Throughout the rest of the summer, I plan to continue with this, and to make sure I am on top of all of the different areas which I need to research and plan into so that my video is ready to be shot when I return back to school. If I can do this successfully, I will save myself a lot of time, and can use my time more efficiently to get my work to the standard I want it to be.

Project log - 6th July

Over the Summer holidays I have made plans to be able to get into contact with my actress in my music video, and go through my initial plans and how I want my video to be produced. My expectations and my visions for my video will also be highlighted so that we both have the same idea of how the video will end up to be successful. As I cannot start to film, due to holidays clashing etc, I plan to clearly set out all of my ideas so that when I get back to school, I can start off from where I left off and not cause any confusion for myself.

Conventions of a music video

History or music video

Music video isn’t that new, in fact they’ve been around since before films could have sound. Some performers would project images onto a screen as they played live, these images would then reflect the themes and emotions of the music played. The earliest versions of what we think of as the music video were to come in the 1920s with the Vitaphone shorts and Spooney Melodies. From the 1930s to the early 1960s Musicals were one of the dominant genres in film and many set pieces were extracted to promote the films.

In 1894, sheet music publishers Edward B. Marks and Joe Stern hired electrician George Thomas and various performers to promote sales of their song "The Little Lost Child". Using a magic lantern, Thomas projected a series of still images on a screen simultaneous to live performances. This would become a popular form of entertainment known as the illustrated song, the first step toward music video.

The development of different music videos over the years is mainly due to the new technologies and money which is available. For example, Marilyn Monroe's music video for 'I wanna be loved by you'.

This video is a perfect example of how the new uses of technologies have been used in order to improve the look and success of music videos. In previous years the outcome of music videos havent been as powerful as ones that are more current as they havent got the different services and technologies to impact on the overall outcome of the video.

Project log - 2nd July

In our previous lesson, we presented our presentations in the style of Dragons Den. We basically had to pitch the different ideas which we had to do with our music video's to our teacher and the rest of the class. The presentation had to include the shots which you thought were effective in the chosen music videos of examples, and the two songs which mainly followed the conventions of the chosen genre. This presentation was filmed for each of us, allowing us to cut up the footage and put it onto our blogs to show the steps of improvement and feedback we have gotten from others who could be potential viewers.
